and finished dosage forms, are pleased to announce a successful completion of its SAP project, which evolved in response to the company’s growing need to support its acquisitions’ programme. The company’s goal was to integrate the SAP system within a very aggressive timeline.
Since its creation through an MBO in 2004, Aesica has grown significantly through acquisitions. The first site was acquired from Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) in 2006, located at Ponders End, North London, and is dedicated to API manufacturing.
The second site was acquired from Abbott in 2007 based in Queenborough, Kent, and is specialising in the manufacture of formulations and packaging services.
Speaking at the SAP World Tour 2009 Aesica’s Head of IT, Bhavesh Kotecha said: "Managing information is key when acquiring other sites and companies. We had to ensure we have common policies and processes.”
During the past few years Aesica used a number of ERP systems including a SAP R/3 system, JD Edwards, BPCS and various legacy systems. In 2008 Aesica established its need for a new ERP system and engaged the IBM Express Life Science solution, tailored for the |

pharmaceuticals industry, with embedded best-practice processes and controls.
Aesica used a standard template from IBM, which provided 85% of the functionality required by the business, leaving 15% customisation work. Kotecha said: "The hardest part of the project was getting the data out. We looked at how to map our data and had a very good internal team to understand the data.”
Aesica successfully completed the data migration and standardised on SAP best-practice processes and applications. This enables Aesica to integrate and understand acquired businesses rapidly, bring efficiencies allowing to maximise shareholders’ value.
The integrated components will allow us to provide consolidated reports from multi-site activities, helping Aesica discover production and process efficiencies. Aesica’s IT are looking further at how to enhance and improve with value added benefits for the business from this “One-Aesica” SAP system.
