The absolute advantage that China has in manufacturing of a wide array of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) including penicillin, streptomycin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline and gentamicin combined with the country’s breaking the dominance by developed countries in research and development, manufacturing, localization and marketing of dozens of other antibiotics has enabled China to establish groups of companies and a complete industrial chain for antibiotics manufacturing, according to commentary that was issued at an industry forum recently held in Chengdu, Sichuan province.

Development and Chinese Pharmaceutical Association. Representatives from antibiotic API and preparation manufacturers across China were in attendance.
The antibiotics segment has become an important part of China’s pharmaceutical sector. With more than 100 antibiotics in production, China has now taken the lead worldwide in total production volume of antibiotics.
Statistics show that the total annual production volume of antibiotics made in China now stands at 147,000 tons, with 24,7000 tons destined for export. Seventy-five percent of the world’s penicillin industrial salt, 80 percent of the world’s cephalosporin antibiotics and 90 percent of the world’s streptomycin antibiotics are produced in China. innovation, globalization and sustainability instead of overcapacity, simple copying and a low industrial concentration rate, said An Haoyi, chairman of Shuzhong Pharmaceutical Group, a leading Chinese manufacturer of amoxicillin, cephalosporin and azithromycin antibiotics.
An is confident that China will achieve more breakthroughs in antibiotics manufacturing. Currently, Shuzhong Pharmaceutical Group is aggressively investing in upgrading and expanding its production volume.
